I have never felt so welcome at a hotel as I did here. Despite arriving much later than expected, we were greeted with tea and had our bags carried up to the room. The room was amazing and furnished to a high standard. The bathroom was spotless. As a young couple, we often feel uncomfortable in higher rated hotels, but we were treated like any one else here and it was great. Breakfast was delicious, with a fantastic variety of options. I cannot recommend the marstan enough. A truely wonderful stay!

After much research on Trip Advisor, we finally settled on the Marstan and weren't disappointed. The location is perfect, being less than a 10 min walk to everything from restaurants and shops to the beach. Parking is great and our room was fab! Ian and Craig are lovely and run their hotel with precision. We loved the amazing breakfasts, meeting other guests whilst having a nightcap was fun and Craig plays a mean tune on the piano. Our only regret was not making use of the hot tub or pool. We would definitely stay here again should we return to Torquay in the future and would recommend to all. Good luck with the book Ian, we look forward to reading it!

Response from Hotel
Thank you for your review. I think that everybody in the hotel seemed to be showering at the same time on the day that you stayed which caused a drop in the water pressure. I apologise for the inconvenience. We have spent a small fortune in upgrading the plumbing in the building and it is far better than it was, but we appreciate that it is still not perfect. Thank you for your other kind and valued comments.

A Bit Of A Gem

Lovely Stay
We made a returned visit after staying at the hotel 7 years ago. It was another lovely stay. Staff are very friendly and happy to help. Breakfast selection is fantastic. Only issue we had was with hot water in the room and the power of the shower in our room throughout our 2 night stay which meant we weren't able to shower on our last day. We did mention this to the staff and they said they would investigate. We would return again.

Clare Mapstone - 2nd Sep, 2013

Response from Hotel
Thank you for your kind comments. I think the water pressure issues were down to everyone in the entire hotel showering at once (everybody arrived for breakfast at 0925). The system is generally quite good and we have invested heavily upgrading it, but that morning it could not cope. Typically, people like breakfast at varying times throughout the morning, this was exceptional. Thank you again for your kind comments and we hope to see you soon.

Excellent. Good facilities and standard of accommodation. Service superb, breakfast cooked to order and excellent. I would recommend this hotel without reservation and will certainly stay there again if we revisit the area.

Just Perfect!
The Marstan has so much to recommend it; friendly atmosphere, lovely people, quiet and as others have said, spotlessly clean. It is just the right size - small enough so that you can really get a personal service and chat to other guests in the bar or round the pool but big enough so that you can be on your own if you prefer. Craig and Ian and the rest of the staff make everyone welcome and nothing is too much trouble. Oh -and breakfast is wonderful too!

Response from Hotel
Thank you for this kind review. It was a pleasure to meet you and your family. It is worth mentioning that Torbay has £400 million of inward investment over the next five years. This includes a much needed new road link into the town that should relieve the congestion problems that have been a strangehold on economic growth for the past three decades. We are optimistic that this will transform the towns appearance. As you rightly mention, we are based in the conservation area close to Meadfoot Beach which is still as beautiful as it was in Victorian times. Thank you again for your kind comments and we hope that you will return soon.

My 3 main must haves when seeking accommodation are quality bedding, lots of big soft towels and a spotlessly clean bathroom. All of these were provided. Breakfast very good too. Lovely place to stay, made very welcome by owners.

Oh I Do Like To Be Beside The Seaside...
After much searching on the Internet for somewhere nice to stay for a short break in Torquay, we certainly made the right decision in booking The Marstan.

On arrival we received a very warm welcome from Ian. We were offered a cup of tea/coffee whilst our bags were taken to our room. We were given a short welcome briefing about the hotel and the local area and it was clear that nothing would be too much trouble if we needed help with what to do, where to go, booking restaurants etc.

The room was spotlessly clean with a very comfortable bed and antique furniture in keeping with the character and style of the hotel.

A list of restaurant recommendations was most welcomed and the three restaurants we chose from the list were all top class; Jingles Mexican, Yum Sing Chinese and The Orange Tree.

Breakfast was a very relaxing experience in the beautiful dining room, with a varied selection of breakfast options, freshly cooked to order and absolutely delicious. No need for lunch !

Sadly we did not get the opportunity to use the swimming pool or hot tub due to the typical English summer holiday weather, but hopefully next time.

The hotel is ideally situated, only a 5-10 min walk into town and the beach is at the bottom of the road.

We would have no hesitation in recommending The Marstan and will definitely book again for our next trip to Torquay. Thank you Ian & Craig for our lovely stay.

We thank this guest for their review. We do not provide evening meals and do not advertise as doing so, however we appreciate that in this instance the guest had very limited mobility therefore we were delighted to help out by cooking a simple dinner each night. We appreciate that our car park is steep and we hope it did not cause this guest too many problems. It is level once entered. Always Flawless
So we were back again. You are always assured of a happy smiling welcome when you cross the Marstan’s threshold. The place is delightfully decorated and furnished with period pieces. The place is always spotlessly clean – both public areas and bedrooms and bathrooms. The hosts will do their upmost to resolve any small issues that you have or may arise during your stay – including calling-in favours at local restaurants to make reservations for guests.

The cooked English breakfast is a tour de force of premium local products all freshly prepared to order and served by a waitress for whom nothing is too much trouble. The freshly home made croissants are good enough to make a Paris Patisserie weep. There are healthier options, but hey – this is a holiday! If only some of the local restaurants were this good.

There is a small bar in which every guest is made to feel they have something interesting to say as the hosts engage them in conversation and try to involve everyone there in the exchanges.

I wish I could stay longer.

Long Weekend In March
The hotel was in an excelent position - walking distance to centre and beach. We were able to park on arrival and not use the car again for the whole four days as buses and ferries close, cheap and frequent. Good breakfast with very friendly and efficient service. Friendly and helpful hosts. Bedroom spacious, en-suite spoless and sylish, bed very comfortable (Premier) with good bedding and towells. All well decorated and furnished. Our only wish was that the beverage tray and bathroom toiletries could be fully replenished daily. Minor complaints on an otherwise excellent stay.

Welcoming Hotel
I stayed at the Marstan Hotel earlier this month and as usual the standards were high, the service is always friendly and pleasant. The owners of the hotel are so welcoming and generally nice people that this was my fourth visit to the hotel. I would certainly recommend the hotel to anyone who is thinking of visiting Devon. The rooms are very clean, the breakfast is lovely and the atmosphere is very relaxed. I will definitely visit the hotel in the future. Rated five stars, well worth the visit.

'the Marstan Is Marvellous'
Ian and Craig are great guys, they made our break in Torquay so enjoyable! We have never experienced such a warm and inviting welcome as the welcome we received when we arrived at the Marstan. All the recommendations of places to go and visit, eat at and directions given ensured we have a fab time in Torquay.

Great Hotel, Shame About The Football
Having persuaded my wife to accompany me to Torquay to watch AFC Wimbledon on a Tuesday, the compromise was to stay at The Marstan. What a lovely, pleasant and friendly experience it proved to be. We stayed in Room 4, that pictured on the web site. It was spacious with grand furnishings and the most enormous comfortable bed; I can't remember the last time I slept so well. Breakfast was superb; if you watch 3 in a bed, Craig's cooking would top that! Do try their home made granola and yoghurt. Delicious. We were suprised with Torquay, it is a town blessed with many quality restaurants. I would recommend 7 Fish Bistro, 15 minutes walk away. Awesome. I suppose I should mention the football. We lost! My wife said 'Long way to come and lose'. At least The Marstan was worth the journey. We stayed for two nights but should have stayed longer. I would recommend The Marstan.

Best Place In Torquay!
Great breakfasts cooked to order; congenial hosts who played the piano for us to sing to and even threw in a yoga lesson! Try the upstairs rooms with baths; heavenly. Opulent sitting and dining rooms as well as a bar. Nothing too much trouble, thoroughly reccommend. Ideal for a lady travelling on her own, romantic couples or those who appreciate privacy, comfort and attention. Thank-you for a great stay!

Lovely Stay
My husband and I enjoyed a 2 night stay at the Marstan. We were greeted with a warm welcome from Iian and served a cup of tea in the lounge whilst completing paperwork. Our room was a standard double with a large shower room which looked almost new. The room was plenty large enough for our needs and had tea / coffee making facilities. The breakfast was lovely and served with a smile from a beautifully turned out lady. We did manage to use the hot tub following a lengthy walk around the stunning coastline, which was wonderful. Having stayed in many 5* hotels / guesthouses, I would say that the Marstan is more of a 4* but this would not stop me staying there again.

Response from Hotel
This is a very kind review and we thank the guest for it. To address the point made with regards to our rating: We are independently assessed by the AA who use a homogenous rating system along with Visit Britain. We sit at the higher end of the five star guesthouse range. The room booked by this guest is classified as a Standard double – which are our entry level rooms but they are still decorated to a high standard with new ensuite bathrooms. More luxurious rooms are available which add extra features, more space and slightly nicer views. We thank this guest once again for their positive comments and valued opinions and look forward to welcoming them back.

Fantastic Service
From the moment we checked in, the service provided by Craig and Ian was fantastic. They booked a restaurant for our first anniversary for us and must have told the restaurant it was our anniversary, as they gave us a special dessert. The hotel itself is plush, clean and very comfortable, and we made use of the hot tub which was ready for us as soon as we asked. We were provided on check in with information about all the places to eat and things to see in the vicinity. The hotel was a short walk to the beach in one direction, and the town in the other. Would highly recommend this hotel.

Unmatchable Service
This was our 2nd time at the Marstan and it reminded me of why we went back - the service is 2nd to none. All the hotel staff are warm and friendly and they are especially lovely towards the children. It was great to have an eating out guide for the local area. This hotel is clean, classy and comfortable. My children felt completely at home. We will thoroughly recommend it to others!

A Lovely, Elegant Hotel
How refreshing to find a friendly hotel where the owners believe that first class customer service is still important. Craig and Ian made us very welcome at The Marstan and it appears that nothing is too much trouble. The lady serving at breakfast is friendly, very efficient and is able to guide you through the excellent menu. All the food served was of an exceptionally high standard.

The hotel is good value for money, very clean and the public areas are immaculate. It is situated in a quiet area but within walking distance of the town and beach. We will definitely stay at The Marstan hotel again on our next visit to Torquay.

Tranquil In Torquay
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at The Marstan. On arrival we were greeted with a welcome cup of tea and a chat regarding any requirements we had and suggestions for places to visit and recommendations for reataurants.

The decor and furnishings were ideal for such a grand Georgian house and created a homely atmosphere.

Our bedroom was spacious and comfortable with plenty of room for a large comfotable bed.

Breakfast was a treat and Craig makes an excellent omlette.

We would definitely stay here again.

In May 1985, just six days after the Bradford Stadium fire, a third of the old grandstand was destroyed during an early morning blaze. Nobody was hurt, but as a result, the ground’s capacity fell to below 5,000. In the few years after the fire the ground saw little change. During the late 1980s and throughout the 1990s, Plainmoor has finally seen some major changes. The old Mini Stand made way for the all-seating Family Stand, which also houses offices, the boardroom and the club shop, as well as the pub and restaurant Boots and Laces, and the 200 Club bar.
